Every season offers a pageant of wonder for elk ranchers. As soon as bull elk lose their antlers, they start the unbelievable process of growing new antlers that grow from 10 lbs. to as many as 50 lbs. in 75-80 days (more than 2 cm per day). While antlers are growing at this fantastic rate, we move right into the most exciting time of the year with the arrival of the newborn calves. The long-legged, spotted calves stay hidden in the grass for 7-10 days, but then they venture out to frolic and entertain. Shortly after the calves are weaned, the breeding cycle begins again. In early September, the elk bulls establish their territory, and the haunting bugling calls echo in the countryside as the evening air becomes crisp and speaks of winter.
